bohemian traders | summer breastfeeding style
Eight years ago I really struggled to find breastfeeding-friendly clothes that I liked. I didn't want to change the way I dressed just because I was breastfeeding but for a while there, a stretchy black singlet was my go-to - every day!
But now? We're spoilt for choice. Thankfully a number of Australian designers have recognised the significant gap in the market and they have filled it (and they generously refresh it, every season).
But buttons down the front isn't my only requirement when I'm shopping for postpartum clothes. I like comfortable clothing that creates a flattering silhouette. Loose, flowing tops and dresses are my go-to at this time of year. Thick straps, cool cotton and pockets are preferable, too.
These two outfits from Bohemian Traders will take me right through summer and well into autumn.
The
Embroidered Moonflower Top (I wear a S) is made from the softest cotton muslin and features delicate floral embroidery. When I find a style that I like I tend to wear it for years and I know this top will be one of my essentials from here on in. The deep-v neck makes feeding a breeze and the loose fit is just, well, easy. Granted, this isn't a top I'll wear on humid, sticky days but it's perfect for cool evenings and I'm planning on wearing it with jeans, a big scarf and boots when autumn comes around.
It's been a while since my legs have seen the sun but a pair of shorts is a summer essential, as far as I'm concerned. The
Denim Utility Short (I wear a S) cuts at just the right length and gives the impression that my legs are longer than they actually are. In my opinion, this makes for a very successful pair of shorts.
And the
Gingham Folk Smock (I wear a M) has all the right features for me at this stage of motherhood - thick straps to cover breastfeeding bras, buttons for easy feeding access and big pockets for keys, dummies and other paraphernalia. As a bonus the classic print and A-line cut will see me through seasons and sizes (pop on a cardi and boots in autumn and you're good to go).
I'll be returning with this series in March with a few options for your autumn breastfeeding wardrobe.

bohemian traders | summer breastfeeding style
When we moved last year we left behind some pretty great neighbours. Em and I went to school together and ended up living in the same street just as we became mothers. We borrowed from each other's pantries a few times a week (she always wanted tinned tomatoes or Spanish onion, I was always after parsley or celery) and, at times, each other's wardrobes. We would often catch up for a lengthy cup of tea and share our motherhood woes. Sometimes we'd just chat about the best colour cushions to put on the lounge.
And then she launched Bohemian Traders and I watch as her business idea quickly grew into a fashion label with a dedicated following. Last week when I sighed yet again at my postpartum body I called her up and she offered me some pretty profound advice:
"You still see yourself at the nineteen-year-old waif, don't you."
"Yes!"
"I do the same thing. But we're not nineteen anymore. We've birthed three babies and we've got the soft belly and bum to prove it. That doesn't make us any less beautiful."
Emily has always told it like it is - she's good like that. She's also amazing at designing clothes for women of all ages and sizes. Go look at her instagram account and she's dressing everyone from teens to grandmothers. And they all look stunning; proud, statuesque, elegant.
I'm incredibly fussy when it comes to clothes. Not everything by
Bohemian Traders is my cup of tea. But the classic, boho-inspired pieces are and whenever I try on a new design I'm always happy with how it looks and how it makes me feel. Indeed, the designs I choose are incredibly flattering; they enhance my figure and suit my lifestyle.
Take the
Embroidered Linen Diamond Dress for instance. This classic, shift style is literally a throw-on-and-walk-out-the-door design and the weight of the pure linen is luxurious. The sleeves cut at just the right angle and the embroidery ensures it's a statement dress. And because Em knows how hard it is to find stylish breastfeeding-friendly clothes, she's designed a low neck that fastens with tassel-ended ties.
Bohemian Traders just launched its new collection
Moroccan Summer - fresh, light designs in a sea-inspired palette. Free shipping is available till Friday midnight with the code: simpleshipping.

fabrik | summer breastfeeding style
Dressing my postpartum, breastfeeding body is tricky, at times. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't care about what I wear. I do care - greatly. I enjoy leaving the house and feeling good about the clothes I wear but as a mother those clothes need to be practical - easy to wear and easy to wash.
Many of my favourite clothes can't be worn at the moment - they aren't breastfeeding-friendly and well, they don't fit quite right (the baby weight is well and truly stuck). So over these past few weeks I've sought out a summer wardrobe that won't require any forethought. I want to be able to throw on a dress and walk out the door without thinking about matching this or that. I want to be able to breastfeed Percy without pulling and tugging or ruining a neckline. And I want to be cool; natural breathable fabrics are a necessity.
Over the next three weeks I'll be featuring five outfits that, along with a few skirts and cotton tops, will see me through summer.
Thankfully, there are an increasing number of Australian designers who are creating clothes with breastfeeding women in mind. Not surprisingly, they are mothers themselves, hence they wholeheartedly understand the importance of dressing and flattering the postpartum body.
Sarah from
Fabrik is one of them. Her latest collection features a range of
breastfeeding-friendly options that are simple and beautiful. Renowned for making
clothing with a conscience, Fabrik's designs are bohemian-inspired and, well, easy - perfect for everyday wear.
I'm wearing:
The Diamond Dress : made from handprinted cotton (also available in a
skirt), this dress is a sheath style with flattering sleeves and a button down top. It's incredibly soft and sheer - nude underwear or
a slip is required. However, it's one of those dresses that you can easily throw over swimmers at the beach or dress up for a Christmas party or dinner date. Personally, I never restrict clothes to "special occasions" - if I love something I'll wear it regardless. I'm wearing a size 2.
The Goa Dress : from French label, Blue, this dress is a smock-style with long sleeves that I tend to roll up. While not ideal for scorching hot days, this is my choice when I'm feeling a little on the hippy side. The jewel tones are very flattering and the patterns will disguise all manner of avocado smooshed stains. I'll wear it with tan sandals and, on occasion, beaded earrings. The only qualm I have about this dress is the beads on the end of the neckties...not great for little ones who like to chew but a beautiful detail that I love (and can easily tuck away when Percy is in the sling). I'm wearing a S/M and there's plenty of room to move.
If you fancy treating yourself to something summery,
Fabrik is offering 20% off till Friday midday (AEST) with the code 20PS. If you have any questions about fit, fabric or cut, feel free to ask me in the comments section.

Fabrik just launched its new spring collection and the
linen hanky dress is my favourite piece. I adore linen for its practicality and texture; its spontaneous crinkle is always appealing. Perhaps the best thing about this natural fabric is that it gets better with age and wear.
This classic black dress features a waisted panel for a flattering fit and falls just below the knee. Here we go again but this is a piece that will happily stay in your wardrobe for a good decade.
Fabrik is happy to offer you 10% off the entire women's collection for the next three days. Simply enter the code: PRACTISINGSIMPLICITY at checkout.

I've always been a skirt + top girl but in the past few years I've really embraced the dress. Why? It's easy!
Despite the fact that spring is new and it is still quite wintry, I've worn this gorgeous linen number a few times. The cut is really flattering, it has pockets (always a plus!) and there's room for my growing belly.
And, because my feet are as narrow as can be (and because most sandals look like clowns shoes on me) I've fallen head over heels for these gorgeous leather sandals that will be my go to over the next few months. I loathe shoe shopping so I'm particularly grateful that I don't have to think about it (but I do have to think about a pedicure).

Firstly, thank you so much for your beautiful messages on yesterday's post - your excitement and happiness makes this experience all the more special. As I have already mentioned, it's been hard to keep it a secret and if you know me in real life, it's been hard to hide the belly. Third time around and I have popped; I was in maternity jeans at 7 weeks pregnant! Considering I've spent the past few months rotating leggings, jeans and floaty tops, I'm definitely ready for a change.
When Em from Bohemian Traders showed me this red and white stripe number I knew it would be perfect for my second trimester. I usually opt for the classic navy and white but I really like this pop of colour - it's fun and spring-like and it's a nice change from the dark shades of winter. As per usual, I'm wearing a scarf/shawl which adds a chic, bohemian touch (and will make a fabulous baby swaddle/pram cover/beach blanket).
Bohemian Traders HQ is a very short walk from my house so I plan to make the most out of the gorgeous new season products as my belly grows. And come mid-summer when the heat is intense and I'm bountiful and waddling...I'll be wearing poppy pants - every day.

In the past few months I've been creating a simple and functional wardrobe; I'm aiming for minimal and beautiful. It's definitely a time consuming process that requires patience, objectivity and a certain amount of ruthlessness. As I sorted out the last decade of clothes I kept coming back to the idea of purpose and colour and the ability to mix and match. It didn't take me long to realise that I have a lot of stunning feature pieces and not nearly enough basics. A revelation! Whenever I buy something for myself I'm drawn to beauty, not necessarily practicality; hence my abundance of clothes that can't be worn together unless I'm going for a look akin to Rainbow Bright.
Enter the neutral colour palette and well-made, well-cut basics. Fabrik has just launched the military pant (comfy enough to wear while lazing about at home, but stylish enough to wear out) and a range of bamboo tees that feature a beautiful round neck and slightly lower hem at the back. The tees are also ideal for tucking into high-waisted skirts as the fabric is soft and light and doesn't bunch.
Fabrik is offering you 25% off the entire collection till Monday night. Just enter the code practisingsimplicity at checkout.

wearing : bohemian traders and the horse
My friend Em recently designed the ultimate
casual yet stylish shirt. It's flowy and flattering, made from soft, quality cotton and features a deep-v neck - a little bit sexy. It's been a topic of conversation in my prenatal classes when a few students asked my for advice on good breastfeeding clothes (the practical options out there don't tend to embrace style, do they). Team it with
jeans and a
big scarf and the sweetest pair of
rosey ankle boots and there you have it; an autumn uniform.

A few weeks ago I shot the autumn/winter womenswear collection for Fabrik. I love shooting fashion editorial, especially when the brand shares my passion for organic, natural and stylish. that resonates most will win.
Winner will be announced in this post on Thursday 28th March and is open to international readers. Best of luck!

I'm incredibly fussy when it comes to clothes, so much so that over the years I've become quite disinterested in shopping. More often
than not I find something I like but the designer has gone one step too far; how I wish they would forgo fuss and embrace simplicity. This is almost always the case when it comes to dresses - it's really hard to find something that's just right. So you can imagine my delight when Lilya recently sent me the Pyramid Dress - French-inspired and oh so chic, its classic cut, elegant neckline and sleeves and flattering skirt pleases me to no end. This number can be worn with flats or heels, sandals or boots - it's trans-seasonal and timeless and will be in my wardrobe for a long while. For something similar I also love the Spiritus Dress - can't go past a good stripe.

this is a sponsored post
A few years ago I "met" Em from Little Tienda via instagram. She posted a few photos of her beautiful Mexican blouses and I gushed and swooned and before long, a white cotton number was in my wardrobe. It's much loved and always worn.
I know many of you have experienced the same feelings; delicate embroidery and vivid colour has you hooked. But do you know Em's story? She travelled to Mexico as a child; her memories of that journey still strong. Twenty-seven years on she continues to treasure the souvenirs from her trip - a hand-loomed Falsa blanket and a pottery cat. She's visited Mexico many times (most recently in 2013) and with each experience her love of the country and its people grows. I spoke to her about Little Tienda, her support of hand-crafted and fair trade and what it's like to be a working mother of 3.5 kids (she's due soon!).
After the birth of my third child, my brother asked me what I was going to do now. I answered: 'Raise three children.' He reminded me of my years in the corporate world and the many years of tertiary study and suggested a couple of things that I might want to try. I said to him that if I was going to do anything it would be the creation of a little shop from Mexico. So Little Tienda ('tienda' means store or shop in Spanish) was born.
Tell me a little bit about the craftsmen that create your products - where do they come from, how do they live and why do they make what they do?
We have artisans that supply pieces to us from all over Mexico. Most of our clothing comes from Oaxaca and Chiapas - both states are well know for their textile artisans. I have visited three of the families in their homes and have spent time with them and their children. They live in beautiful little houses, filled with laughter and joy. 3-4 rooms (living, kitchen and bedrooms) and the bathroom/ laundry outside of the home. Small by Australian standards but bursting with pride and love.
They create traditional Mexican clothing by using techniques passed down from their mothers and grandmothers (we make some modifications to suit the Australian style). They choose to create clothing because it allows them the flexibility to work from home (toddlers at their feet if need be) and take their older children to and from school. This resonates with me - it's how I have chosen to work and I know I'm lucky to have the opportunity to do so.
What are your best selling products?
Our most popular pieces are the Las Flores Dresses (all three of them) for their casual and easy wear, the Zita Dress for the exquisite embroidery, absolute comfort and undeniable style, the Florecer Blouse for sweet embroidery (perfect for everyday wear) and the 100% cotton serape, handwoven and ideal for the beach, picnic, couch or bedroom.
You're a mama of 3.5 kids - how do you balance work and motherhood?
I work really hard and know that the rewards for my efforts are being with my kids whenever they need me. I feel so blessed to do what I do, so grateful for the support that I receive from my customers and so proud to support women and men in their craft throughout Mexico - how can I not put in 100% everyday? I am so passionate about Little Tienda that is hardly feels like work (although book keeping -seriously, why?). I am also reminded by other incredible women that we are all doing our best. I am sure there are days when I fail someone, but on the whole I just focus on the bigger picture and work one day at a time to piece it all together.
Do you own a piece of Little Tienda? If so, how do you like to wear it?

wearing : bohemian traders

My friend
Em recently opened a little online store that stocks all things bespoke, bohemian and fair-trade from India.
Bohemian Traders is brimming with colour and block-printed pattern; ideal for those who like to seamlessly blend beauty and practicality.
A few years ago I spent time living in an ashram and
poppy pants, light cotton tops and
scarves quickly became my uniform. I revisited this incredibly comfortable wardrobe when we were in Bali and I must admit, it works particularly well with motherhood. Loose fitting cotton voile pants are best worn slightly high on the waist with a simple, classic top - flowy enough for yoga, pretty enough for a cafe date, they're even light enough to fall asleep in (I speak from experience).
I wear: vintage cotton top /
poppy pants (I'm also loving
this skirt) /
flower child scarf / watch c/o
