a spring cleaning guide : the things you own

How interesting that the inspiration behind this series is no longer a seasonal cleanse but a lifestyle change.

So many of our friends have suggested that we buy the house we're currently living in but if I know anything right now, I know that it feels only right to move on. Inconvenient or not, it's the perfect time for change.

Today I started thinking seriously about packing. I've just completed a big deadline and a photography job and so for the next short while, I can focus all my energy on this change. It's one thing to think about packing up your house but to set the wheels in motion...well, it's quite cathartic from a cleansing perspective.

I can't express how thankful I am that I've already put a good six weeks or so into spring cleaning and decluttering. The job doesn't seem quite so overwhelming as a result. That said, there are still many areas of the home that require my attention. Daniel is already ten steps ahead of me, tackling the mammoth task that is the garage; listing items on ebay, booking a council pick-up, practising non-attachment. I've starting sorting through our bookshelf, looking at all those once-read novels with a new perspective; perhaps it's time to pass those stories on to others. I suppose I'm starting with the superfluous - packing the things we don't use every day and leaving the essentials till the last minute.

One box at a time.

Today we signed the lease on a little cottage. I can't wait to fill you in on all the details but meanwhile, this is our front yard (and no, there isn't a dishwasher!).

  2. I love how you're able to speak about one of the most (potentially) chaotic life experiences with such calm. This is really a refreshing place to come and be for a little while. I'm thrilled for you and your new cottage! That photo you posted is incredible.

    1. Oh goodness, I'm just so relieved that we found a house. My biggest worry was the lack of appropriate rentals (it's common knowledge around these parts!). Now, with a few weeks till we can move, we can take it slowly, which suits my current pregnant self just fine x

  4. Oh no - books are like foundations... keep them all. (sorry I am so bad at getting rid of things, I don't even know you and I am trying to stop you! There must be no hope for me, but save yourself and ignore me)

  6. What a perfect time to be moving up and setting up anew, right when the shape of the family is about to change - so perfect. Have been thinking about you today, thinking about how I had some concerns about how the big two would cope with a new baby - jeaulousy? acting out? - and how much I was delighted and surprised by how immediately we all embraced George as 'our baby'. They never felt jealous because she belonged to the, rather than usurped them. It's still the same now. That third baby, so special. xxxxx
