lately...

sweet peas with the richest scent from mama + popa's garden (they've grown particularly well next to coriander) / starting to put a few things aside for Bali (including lovely gifts from fabrik and lilya)

Saturday marks the end of six weeks of solo parenting. Daniel has been working away and I have been working full-time, a new experience for us and one that has, at times, been downright challenging. At the beginning I found myself getting completely overwhelmed with the weeks ahead so I quite literally had to take it one day at a time. I'm mindful that this could be a new normal for us (the film industry is renowned for short notice and long, long hours) but for now I'm grateful that the end of this stint is near. Yes!

Today I finalised stories for work, wrote lists of things to buy and clothes to pack, looked at all the food still in the fridge and thought about the best way to use it all before we go away (juice, anyone?). I tried my best to put our broken/unfixable car and a whole lot of lost money into perspective, marvelled at the non-existence of public transport in our area and accepted help from the grandmothers (again!). After considering, buying and then returning a high-waisted bikini I purchased two gorgeous one-pieces (bandeau and halter) that fit beautifully and will last for the next three summers - fingers crossed.

Yesterday evening, after Che had spent the afternoon eating ice cream and swimming in the rock pool with mama, he held my hand as we walked and said aloud: "Ah, this is the life." Isn't it just.

  2. I adore sweet peas but mine have faltered this year sadly.

I'm in the middle of a solo parenting stint (a short one thankfully this time) and can relate with taking it day by day.

Before being a Mama I was a soundie in the film industry so I can also relate with the short notice, long hours and travel!

    Enjoy your up-coming adventures :)

  5. I'm so glad you have managed to find the calm during your solo stint. I too often do quite long stretches with my toddler as my husband travels to Russia or South Africa. It can be challenging during the best at times and worse during a stressful event. Your description of an afternoon spent in a rockpool, has given me some focus to be kind to myself during this specific solo stint. x

  7. Oh you're amazing. Yes, I forget that often...one day at a time. One day a time. Otherwise focusing on (and enjoying) the moment just gets too weighed down. By the way...I just got a tear reading Che's "ah, this is the life" comment. :) love it. My little man (two years) has been going through a lot of changes and transitions lately and he's been insistent on holding my hand constantly. Even in the house. :)

  17. Our car is also draining us of our money, & leaving us high & dry far too often (i.e breaking down).

On the weekend, I ventured out to head to physio for some ultrasound treatment of my third bout of mastitis - and yep, you guessed it, the car broke down on the way home! Toddler & newborn in the back, livid husband in the front. Not ideal!

As for six weeks of solo parenting? Medal worthy.

You've earnt your upcoming holiday, that's for sure!

  18. Sounds like a well deserved holiday! Do you have any suggestions for travelling to Bali with little ones (mine will be 18 months)? Where to stay, what to do and not to do?
