poet's room : complete

A while ago I read an article about a couple who had just renovated their little cottage. "We lived in it for three years before we even drew up any plans," they said. "We really got to know the house before we changed it."

Here's my rental/small scale/move-rooms-around version of that story.

Shortly after Poet was born I moved Che out of his room and into the office. Poet moved into Che's old room and the office became a trestle table between the lounge room and the kitchen. It worked for a few months...until I decided that the small floor space in Che's new room wasn't conducive to grandiose lego cities.

One day I woke up with a plan and changed it all around. It took about a week and in that time a fair amount of 'stuff' sat idle in the hallway, awaiting my attention. But it's all done now, everything is in its place and, most importantly, the children 'fit' their rooms.

I wanted to keep Poet's room simple and sweet. I've used a colour palette of rather muted tones - lavender, dusty-pink, mustard and grey, and chosen items for their handmade/heirloom appeal. It's a really lovely room to be in; cosy and comfortable. Most importantly it's helped as we transition Poet from our bed to hers (I'll be writing a co-sleeping post in the coming weeks for those who have emailed me and asked). She sleeps in her room during the day and goes to sleep in there of an evening (I hear her little feet tap on the floorboards as she makes her way into our room about 11pm each night). She plays really well in her space; she can reach the shelves, empty-fill-empty-fill-carry the baskets, and is quite happy to lie on the bed reading a book (for about two minutes).

I've listed the main items below because I expect a few of you may ask where I got them from. If I haven't mentioned something just ask in the comments section and I'll answer you there.

Poet's room was also featured on the very lovely A Beautiful Mess today...you can read a bit more about our home over there.

  1. Looking forward to reading your co-sleeping post. We did this with both our boys. Our youngest is now sharing a bunk bed with his brother. We have our bed back now, but I miss having them there......most nights x

  2. Simply beautiful Jodi. You couldn't help but feel relaxed in such a calming space. Sage has many of the same things as darling Poet and she too spends many of the night hours snuggled in our bed. We discovered the most gorgeous, old wooden doll's crib at the local op shop last week and Sage loves spending her days filling (and emptying) it. Thank you for sharing Poet's divine sanctuary x

  5. What a completely lovely little room- Poet is one lucky lady! I love that it's so understated but with the right amount of magic sprinkled on top for a wee one- and the quilt is absolutely gorgeous.

You may well have written about this- please excuse the question if so- but how did you come up with Poet's name? I adore it. Unusual but utterly beautiful. Chloe x

    1. Six years ago when I was pregnant with Che I read a magazine article about a woman with a daughter named Poet. I immediately loved it. I'm a writer too so I did like having a 'word' name. Daniel and I presumed that most people wouldn't like it but the opposite has been true. The usual reaction is: "ohhhhhhhh, what a gorgeous name!". Most importantly she suits it x
ps. we often call her Poe for short

    2. Lovely story- I love the idea of using words too. My brother is a "Darcy" (after Mr. Darcy) which has always provoked a reaction- especially as most associate it with a girl's name nowadays. But I'd trade my two-a-penny name for something more unique and individual any day of the week- though it can have it's uses now and then! x

  6. Poet's room is just adorable Jodi, I love all the handmade touches and I am sure it will be a space that will grow with her over the years.

I'm interested to read your take on co-sleeping...we co-slept with all five of ours with mixed views from family and friends so I am always keen to hear of others experience.

  7. a lovely lovely room, it looks so calming. will look forward to your post on co-sleeping, sounds like our little one and Poet have the same routine going on (Jess will be three in a few months). i do wonder how long until we get our bed back to ourselves. I have a question about where you got that little kitchen from that Che had his feet up upon? it looks like a good size and i am having trouble finding a simple one made of wood in australia. i would buy one from the US if i could justify the shipping cost, the seem to do them so well over there.

  10. Absolutely lovely, there is a lot to be said for waiting for the right arrangement to form in your mind, it's amazing how beautifully things fall in to place when you decorate that way.

  11. Wow, so beautiful and utterly tranquil. I love the books, the stuffed toys, and I'm a complete sucker for that Apple Papple print.

    1. I begged Jess to custom make me a single bed size and she obliged! There are white ribbons at the end to tie into bows and the linen is divine and softens with age. It's made me think about getting linen sheets for our king bed x

  15. A lovely peaceful space, and so great the way it will grow with her. I loved getting a peep at her bookshelf and seeing old favourites for when she's older. I'm inspired to do some rearranging - thankyou!

  16. What a great room for play, rest and dreaming. A beautiful blend of softies, comfort and furniture that it's spacious and yet tells a story of who lives there. Poet's a lucky one.

  17. Absolutely lovely space for Poet. It is hard not to want to be the little girl who gets to have such a wonderful space all to her own. & I am always glad to hear about co-sleeping. Our youngest still makes it to our bed in the wee morning hours most nights. xo

  23. Dreamy room. Very fond of the map of Paris and your beautiful baby bump all draped in floral and framed in cream. I also really respect the handmade, understated look of the room... not dripping in plastic toys and "gender appropriate" colors. It's like a real, cozy room for little humans.

Thank you for giving a close-up shot of the books. When people are photographing their homes, I always find myself looking for the ones that give us a peek into the bookcases.

    My best,
    Jo Farmer

  29. Gorgeous as always Jodi!

Since Harriet has made her arrival, I have ordered new linen for her cot (she is currently using her sister's old linen but it doesn't suit her at all) and I am just starting to Ted's room too.

Thank you for the inspiration, Poet's room is dreamy and beautiful, just like her.

  31. It's super sweet. I imagine Poet enjoying this lovely room all her own. She is a similar age to Billy; my poor second child hasn't ever had a room all his own (sharing with moving boxes or office equipment) is finally in his own room... albeit incomplete renovations and lacking most other furniture. I look forward to making it his in the near future. Thank you for the inspiration xx

  34. What a beautiful room, every detail is gorgeous, I especially love the bed linen. We rent too and after 16 months of us not all quite fitting in our rooms, we embarked on a very similar room-swap last weekend (it's on my blog tomorrow) - so much better now, sometimes it takes a while to work out how best to use your space but once you crack it, it's a very satisfying feeling!

  35. oh just so beautiful and just the phrase 'co-sleeping' makes me well up and long for days gone by! my baby boy was the only 1 of my babies who co-slept with me, he just never wanted to be off me and to be honest in my sleep deprived state (my eldest has smith magenis syndrome and has a chronic sleep disturbance as part of it, only sleeping about 2 hours a night!) really i wasn't going to fret over should i or not! if he slept happily in my arms that was fine by me! He turns 3 this week and I miss him so much still co -sleeping! my curly topped golden haired boy is growing up too fast! x

  38. Gorgeous room. I too am interested on your ideas on co-sleeping. With my first, Tamika, I was a single Mum, so she basically slept with me until she started high school. She too would start in her bed and end up in mine. Even after she hit high school she would still come into my bed some nights. The only thing that stopped her was when Justin and I started living together. Even now at 20, if Justin spends a night away she comes into bed with me. SO it was only natural for Jarvis to co-sleep. But Justin's family are appalled at the idea and often tell us how bad it is. Jarvis is now 14 months and yet to sleep in his room. I have just started putting him in his cot, which is beside our bed.

  39. What a gorgeous, calm, peaceful room you've created for sweet Poet - it suits her perfectly. I like your mixture of old and new and the way pre-loved items blend in so well with new hand crafted pieces, a similar style to the way I've decorated my daughter's room. I bet that quilt will be a family heirloom for many years to come x
