our local

At least once a fortnight we go to our favourite local cafe and indulge in a few hours of bliss. Bamboo Buddha is my idea of a perfect cafe - wholesome vegetarian food, organic coffee, Balinese day beds and a trickling fish pond. There's little paths in and out of the trees, around and about the pond, and Che spends hours circling them. He wanders up to the kitchen by himself and asks the girls for a cup of fish food (you can see it in his hand in that first photo) and proceeds to sprinkle the lurid orange flakes into the water.

Yesterday we went there for morning tea and ended up staying for lunch. For three and a bit hours we lay on the day bed listening to the birds and the beetles. Poet slept, I took photos and Daniel shot film. Che played the Pied Piper and took some other little kids on a "lizard walk." When we left we felt like we'd been on a holiday. Truly - we floated home.

Che wears this years hazyjane pants. He also wore them in 2010 and 2009. I buy two new pairs for him each year because you can't go past handmade, mama-made, vintage floral cotton pants for our hot, hot summer.

whirr

At playgroup this morning all of us mums were commenting on the sense of urgency that seems to be creeping into out lives right now. We're all feeling the rush of festivities a little early this year. I was comforted to know I'm not the only one feeling a little overwhelmed.

This morning, before said conversation with other mums, I was feeling incredibly, and rather strangely, organised. I was out of the house and in the car about to run errands before playgroup started. I thought it was a little strange that when I got into the driver's seat I had to adjust it. And then I thought it was even stranger that my key wouldn't fit into the ignition. Hmmmm. I jingled and jangled the key about a bit. Still no luck. Damn, there goes my organsied day. And then it dawned on me that last night, while Daniel and I slept only a few metres away, someone had got into my car and tried to start it. It was such an awful feeling. And then came the guilt because I had actually left one door unlocked. And then, and I'm sure this comes as no surprise, I burst into tears. Big, fat tears and the kind of cry that leaves a nasty headache in its wake. I feel really violated and so very annoyed.

My mum consoled me, my Dad, the mechanic, took the ignition to the locksmith (fingers crossed he can fix it) and Daniel arrived home early with the sweetest smelling roses. Because we couldn't drive anywhere Daniel, Che and I walked up to the cafe this afternoon to have coffee and cake and forget our woes.

Coffee and cake - a powerful combination.

totally unrelated photo of the beach and the rock pool where we will no doubt spend many a summer morning

found & delivered

There's a new op shop in our street and it belongs to the (new) local church (there are four churches on our road so we always joke that we live in Holy Land). I like church op shops. Friendly and affordable. I say affordable because some of the price tags I have seen in Salvos and Vinnies are pushing the "op-shop" label a little too far.

A few days ago me and my boys trundled down there and decided the theme of our visit would be check/tartan. Hence we came home with this hand knitted blanket (which is backed in fabric and has 30 children's names written on it, my favourite being Isabelle Tropiana - her parents were cool). Daniel scored an adorable woolen check jacket and I got a gorgeous check cotton long sleeve top which will look uber cute with denim shorts in Spring. Che got a pair of eeni meeni mini moh pants for $3...bargain. He also got a Golden Book and had to explain to the sweet, slightly nutty old lady outside that the bike was his and no, we weren't donating it to the shop.

Today I'm working from home and this is my coffee break. Daniel just came home with a new haircut and I declared him the cutest coffee delivery boy ever. It's Friday. So happy weekend to you.

new local

Perhaps many of my wishes have come true in the form of a new cafe at the end of the road.
A cafe/book exchange with good coffee and wholesome food.
Beautifully decorated.
Jam, teapots and organic bread for sale.
I continue to create excuses as to why I need to go for another walk.
But that's the beauty of it right?
I walk to the cafe. And therefore I deserve the cappuccino.
Free babychinnos too. Wonderful.
