1/52

A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2015.

Poet: her face still covered in sunscreen from the beach, she chooses to wear her showercap in the most ineffective way

Shot on a Canon mkiii with a 50mm 1.4 lens - 1/60, f 2.0, ISO 640

.........................................................................................................

Welcome to The 52 Project for 2015! Firstly, there are no rules - if you feel like you want to, just add your blog link to the linky below. If you would prefer to take part via instagram then just #the52project and link to @practisingsimplicity so I can see your portrait for the week.

If you're new to the project, one of the best things you can do in regards to filing your photos is create a dedicated folder. Save one photo for web resolution and one for print resolution every week and clearly label each one; this ensures that when it comes time to make your 52 book, the process is much easier!

Over the next few weeks I will be posting some photography related posts on a Sunday afternoon to hopefully assist those of you who want to improve your photography and editing skills. Whilst I'm in no way a professional, I do believe that shooting on manual is as easy as one, two, three (yes, three steps) and I'm happy to share them with you. As you can see, I have included my camera settings above and will continue to do so every week. Whilst they are not always the ideal settings for the situation, they give you an idea of how lenient you can be when shooting on manual (ideally I would have shot this at 1/125, f1.4, ISO 1000 but it was one of those moments that I would have missed if I adjusted the settings first). If you have any particular questions relating to photography and editing feel free to leave a comment - I'll make sure I include my answers in a future post.

I look forward to seeing your portraits for the week.

  1. This portrait makes me want to chuckle. Such a gorgeous face even if she does look concerned!
I think I'm going to join in for the first time today. Thanks for creating and hosting such a wonderful concept x

    1. As soon as I opened it in Lightroom I thought of you. It's very much a "lamb loves fox" style shot, I think x

  3. Really looking forward to joining in this year Jodi. I've just started in AV mode as a baby step towards shooting in manual so sharing your settings would be quite useful. xx

  9. Aww what a face - perhaps the shower cap is just for the pretty colours! I'm joining in for the first time today - a little nervously it's true - if I manage to keep up with this I'm going to have 156 portraits of my children by the end of the year so I'm definitely using your top tip to set up folders for the photos now, rather than scrambling back for them in December!

  10. This made me laugh. I love the way you captured her candidness.
I'm joining in this year. I'm not amazing at finishing anything I start, but I'm determined.

    1. I'll be reminding you each and every week! The key is to treat Sunday as your deadline.....even if you take ten shots of your child reading/playing/eating....it's still a portrait and will ensure you don't fall behind (which seems to be the undoing for most people who drop out) x

  12. I found this pic funny too because of the whole purpose of the shower cap. Aren't kids funny they don't care about stuff like that. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane

  15. I love this picture. So fun and well captured. Last year I followed Kim from Mothering With Mindfulness photo journey. This year I resolved to join your project. My photo this week is not particularly good from a technical point, but it was a big moment for us. Shine on.

  16. Dear Jodi, I'm following your project and watching your fabulous pictures of your beautiful children with such a great interest. They are awesome, - both, the kids and the pictures! I have a technical question if you do not mind. I am really grateful that you started including your camera settings, thus my question is about post-processing of the pictures. Do you process them in Lightroom, RadLab, VSCO, or simply use Lightroom presets?
    Thank you!

    1. I use Lightroom for editing - sometimes I'll edit manually, at other times I'll use VSCO presets. I do plan to write a post on editing so keep an eye out x

  17. Is this project only photos of your children? I would love to join in, but my boys are 14 and 17, and I don't think they'd appreciate me joining in. Could I have a photo, say.....from my garden each week? xo Julie

    1. You can photograph whatever you like! In the past, some people have taken photos of their partner, nieces and nephews and home. A portrait series of your garden sounds like a lovely idea x

  18. Love this photo of your daughter! Last night, after looking at some of your Instagram photos, I took everything off our book case, cleaned it and put the books back on neatly, removing some to sell, as I went. I want our home to be less cluttered. Thanks for your inspiration. xo

  19. Poet looks so grown up here Jodi and just look at her beautiful big eyes!! I love watching their growth week by week.
Third time participant here and hoping to have another 104 photos of my girls and accompanying words to hold and reflect on at the end of 2015. I only hope this year doesn't fly by quite as quickly as the past two seemed to. Looking forward to joining in with you each week. x Dre

  20. I'm so excited to join in this year. I'll be taking my pics on an iPhone initially but my Nikon is ready and waiting when I get the courage to turn onto manual :) I look forward to reading your photography tips too Jodi xx

  21. Thank you for the photo tips!
One of my goals for 2015 is to take a photography course. I love playing around with manual but when it is a shot that I feel like I will miss, I switch it back to auto…I would love to be able to stay in manual.

  22. What a great first shot!! Love! I'm joining in for the 3rd year now! yay!
Jodi, will you have a button for the 52 project this year? I love making that my cover page for the books I make afterward. Thanks so much!!

  24. Gorgeous! Love the colours and the expression.

I failed miserably at my project 365 of the girls last year so I've decided to cut back and join you with the 52 week project and hopefully that will be a little more doable. I'm also hoping that my photography study at Tafe will give me extra reason to be taking more portraits of the girls!

  25. I thought I would join in this year though my partner takes the photos sometimes. Good to have a reason to remember to upload them.

  26. Love her expression, if only we could all rock a shower cap like that!

I just wanted to say thank you for hosting this lovely project, it will be my third year participating and I'm so thankful that it exists and that I've managed to keep up with it! the end results are most definitely worth it and something to treasure in years to come!

  27. She is just adorable! I think this one might be a actress one day:) I would love to join after being a spectator for a couple of years. One to learn to use my camera better and two because my second just doesn't get much photo time. Do you have to resize your photos for web on Blogger? It's so wonderful you are going to share some photography tips in your already busy bee family schedule.

  28. Really looking forward to your photography posts! Your photos are beautiful; I would love to read your tips and tricks. I purchased an entry level dslr camera earlier last year and have been having some fun (and some frustrations!) learning to use it in manual mode. Many, many over- and under-exposed shots, but have also managed a few keepers :-)

  29. Hi Jodi, This has to be one of my favourite photos ever! Well captured!
I am going you with the 52 project. How do I add the badge and link it to my photos? Also where is the badge? I had it before but can't seem to find it now. Thanks xxxx

  30. What a fabulous expression caught! Very cute :) I intended to join in with this last year, but was already over halfway through the year when I discovered the project, so in the end didn't. However, I definitely intend to this year! Looking forward to the challenge and seeing the result of 52 (or probably 104 as I have 2 boys!) at the end of the year.

  43. oups,, sorry forgot to ask a photograph question: did I understand correctly that you're shooting your pics with a manual camera? no digital one? how do you proceed then to put the pics online? I'm asking as I've got a manual Nikon FM2 that I love, but barely use anymore, as I don't have any idea how to use the pics done with this one online... so I usually only use our digital little Lumix, which is not bad, but not always as satisfactory than the old manual Nikon... thanks for your help ot tips on this, best, Cécile

  44. That's my third year... and I'm so grateful of all the beautiful memories I've collected along the way!! This year I'm going to post something different: not just portraits of my daughters, but portraits...in general. I've started with me and it was very hard!! It's not easy to step in front of the camera when you've always been behind!!
A question: why you would have shot with another setting? to "freeze" the drops? to get the focus just on the eyes?

  45. Hello! This is my first time…so happy to have stumbled on the project. I was looking for support to stretch myself creatively in 2015. Looking forward to connecting and taking inspiration for you all.

  48. Hi Jodi,
I myself and my friend are joining in this year! We started a blog together called from opposite ends to document our 52 project.
One question, when you say save one for web and one for print? How do u do this? I edit in lightroom, but still trying to teach myself. Will you cover this in your editing post?
Thanks for the inspiration to document our kids growing up!
    Thanks Liz

  50. Are you sick? Have you been battling with strange and funny illnesses? Are you in a situation whereby the doctors have done necessary tests and said there isn’t anything wrong with you? ... These were all my stories until I met with a total cure for them all... His name is Dr. Payo Shalo says my mom... I was almost at the point of death. It was that serious that I was just placed on life support even as the doctors didn’t know what was wrong with me. My mom just came to my hospital bed one morning and said she had found a solution to all of my sufferings (because that was what I referred to the situation I was in then)... She said she was going through the internet and she came across some testimonies of how some people who had similar cases as mine were all cured off their illnesses through the power of this voodoo man. Without hesitation, I told her to contact the man, Which she did and she went on with the procedures as instructed her by this voodoo man (these procedures, I wasn’t aware of because I was in a really bad shape then, And whenever I asked my mom she would say I shouldn’t bother myself about that...that it was something she could handle). Not to bore you readers with too much of my story, in seven days from that day my mom told me about the voodoo man, I was cured off this killer disease that was at the verge of taking my life. Want to share your testimony like me? Contact the voodoo man on his direct email address... payospiritsshalospells’’AT’’yahoo’’DOT’’com (rewrite the email in its right form)... I AM NOW A HAPPY AND HEALTHY YOUNG MAN ONCE AGAIN...THANKS TO DR. PAYO SHALO
