new house, new garden

There's a lot to be said for a house with hydrangeas, Christmas Bush and frangipanis growing in the garden.

We've spent the past few days at our new place; making plans, organising paint, taking down the heavy, pink curtains and mahogany curtain rails. Yesterday the owner of house was there with a local carpenter and together they cleared up the garden, re-grouted the kitchen and introduced us to the neighbours (all of whom are in their eighties and nineties - clearly it's a street renowned for longevity).

I admit, for the past few weeks I've been quite apprehensive about this move. Seven-and-a-half years in one house (the house I have brought two babies home to) creates a definite sense of attachment. The kids are feeling the same and I have no doubt that a period of adjustment will be waiting for us once we shift.

Every time I step into the new house with its beautiful timber floors and countless 1940s windows, I feel more ready to make it home. It's not without its faults (let's just say that the kitchen is higgeldy piggeldy and will require me to simplify even further that I did this spring) but the good far outweighs the bad. And if I'm honest, it's hard to complain when I can see the ocean and listen to its distinct roar come bedtime.

Salt air is waiting.

  1. It's great that you can see the bright side, even amongst the chaos. Moving house is always bitter sweet but once you have your things around you, I'm sure it will feel more like home.

  2. Change brings new things, opens new doors. Sometimes things grow better where they've been moved to. A little TLC is just the rain and organic matter your new patch needs - metaphorically speaking. And we all know the best organic matter has a bit of shit that comes with it. ;)

  4. Oh goodness, see and hear the ocean! That salt air will be amazing for your new babe's sleeping, for sure. Eleanor ALWAYS sleeps well down by the ocean at her grandparents house. Your new home sounds perfect in a very imperfect way. We too have lived in VERY higgeldy piggeldy kitchen situations, and even though on first glance it seems useless, you definitely find your groove and make it work and then wonder what all the fuss was about. I'm definitely jealous of what a great rental agreement you seem to have struck with accommodating owners, that's just the bees knees. Happy nesting mama bear, I moved into our home when I was 6 1/2 months pregnant and couldn't straighten and arrange enough - crazy! Happy times ahead for you all, and hydrangeas? Lucky thing!

  8. Your new home sounds just perfect. The garden sounds lovely, i had decided my house was 'the one' as soon as i saw the frangipani tree & Christmas bush in the front garden. Iam really looking forward to seeing photos of what your new home looks like once you're all settled in. How exciting for you all.

  9. It sounds so exciting. We have just (6months ago) to a 1920 house. The previous owners were there for 27 years. And many f the neighbours for over 30years. We are also planning to stay put for a long time.... The garden in your new place sounds wonderful.

  10. Ohhh I love discovering what's growing in the gardens of new houses - actually we're moving into a rental house in two weeks time, and I delighted in finding lilies in two different spots, a brambly flowering rose, and a camellia bush... The house was a back-up for somewhere else that fell through at the eleventh hour - we felt so sad, the other house felt so perfect for us aesthetically - but I am determined to let this new house grow into a home for us... even with it's emerald green carpet in two rooms! Eeek! Thankfully the rest are polished floorboards :)

  12. My very stylish 70 year old neighbour describes her favourite places as 'higgledy piggledy' so your description of your kitchen made me smile - I reckon there's hope for it :)
