in other places

Despite the fact that it's sunny and spring-like outside, Poet and I are cuddled on the couch. She's warm with a fever and sleeping it off. It's funny, I only thought to myself the other day: "Gosh, she hasn't been sick in ages," and then yesterday she came home from pre-school with cheeks that were a little more rosy than usual. The August winds have arrived right on cue and I find they always whip up a bit of a sniffle.

This week has been very run of the mill and to be honest there really isn't that much to report; just an endless cycle of school runs and housework. I was thankful to discover that my low energy levels of late (which I had blamed on work, motherhood, normal busy life) were in fact related to low iron so I'm on regular doses of floradix, twice daily cups of nettle tea and I'm adding more red meat into my weekly diet. It's a relief to not feel so tired.

this story is an inspiring read (especially for its honesty).

this organic lip-blush. Yes!
after watching every episode over the years, I really enjoyed watching this. So much to think about.

This weekend I'm teaching yoga, baking for the school week ahead and shooting a few new season wearing posts with Luisa (can't wait to share with you). Have a lovely few days...

PS. How on earth did we get to August?!

  2. Jodi,

I am very curious to hear how you do on the Floradix. I found out in the past six months that I too have low iron, and my doctor told me to take a solid supplement. However, upon further research it seems that our bodies don't really absorb the iron in supplements. My mother in law is very into natural medicine, and told me about Floradix (I'm 90% sure that's the one) which she researched for my brother-in-law who had previously been very low iron. She mentioned it was really hard for him to take, because of the taste. I am still struggling with low iron, especially since I've previously had thyroid cancer, and am currently breast feeding my third child, who just turned one. I'd love to get a handle on it, and regain some energy.

    1. Yes, I thoroughly recommend Floradix - it always works for me. Be aware though that dairy and caffeine inhibits the absorption of iron - so if you do take the supplement don't chase it with a coffee x

    2. I take Floradix regularly and always 'chase' it with two vitamin Cs to aid absorption x

    3. I can second the opinion of Floradix being pleasant tasting. I've always found it quite effective too - the other thing I had great success with in my first pregnancy was 'SpaTone' which I took in orange juice. I was really surprised at how that increased my iron levels.

  4. Ah Floradix is my best friend! I was advised to take it during pregnancy both times and have recently been told to take it again due to low iron levels again. Am I the only one that thinks it tastes like rust dissolved in Ribena?! Such a heartbreaking story in one of your links, just such a cruel twist of fate. I always look forward to reading your In Other Places posts. Happy weekend Jodi

  5. Floradix is fabulous stuff! Easily absorbed into the system and totally natural. However, and I add this as a a woman suffering/prone to anemia since the birth of my second child over ten years ago, Floradix is an excellent prevention but its doses are very low. My naturopath warned me about this. If low iron levels are detected it is very important to take higher doses; hence the solid suppléments mentioned above. Also it takes a couple of weeks before the body begins to respond and then, oh my! When anemic I always need to sleep so much. These past few weeks I 've been up with the lark and feeling great. I also find that I fall ill more readily when low on iron. These past couple of weeks the children have had summer colds and I have'nt caught a thing, fingers crossed!

  6. Did you try to dry nettle: a super iron concentrated tool... it can be helpfull perhaps if you want to change from nettle tea? I try to add it to several meals.
    If it can help:http://lilinfolks.blogspot.fr/2014/04/ortie-mon-amie.html
I did drink also Floradix on this side of the earth... so universal :)
