inspired by : colour and keke

Shadow box shelves and herbs in glass jars, roots 'n all.

A while ago I decided not to buy any new magazines; I had a pile awaiting me and I was feeling a little uninspired by all the same-same houses and slightly lacklustre stories. But then last week my mum passed on a recent copy of Inside Out magazine (along with art aprons for the kids and a batch of still-warm cheese muffins) so I hatched a plan to sit on the balcony and flip through the pages, uninterrupted for all of ten minutes. Imbued with colour and new ideas the issue was lively and fresh - the perfect introduction to Melbourne-based artist Kirra Jamison.

Kirra lives in a warehouse style home and, as the article states, she's managed to create a "colourful and organic" space. She has considered every surface, carefully curated her collection of artworks and then added a little plant life - succulents, wild flowers, branches abundant with purple blooms.

While the colour in her home is intriguing it's her kitchen that I kept returning too. Clip-top glass canisters, Japanese pottery and a baby pink teapot are a lovely representation of her aesthetic. But then there's her love and adoration for good, wholesome food and the people that cook it. As a little side project she has created you found keke, there she posts a recipe at a time; documenting the cooking, gathering and tasting experience. My favourites? 'Love fern' paella (oh that kitchen!) and Mullum Market Stack - an education in cactus.

My own kitchen is receiving all my attention at the moment as I meander the long and sometimes confusing wholefood path. I'll be adding to the story soon but in the meantime I'm searching for cast-iron frying pans, glass storage options and yummy linen, of the small batch variety.

"inspired by" is a new little series for me, I hope you like it.

  1. Yes I saw this shoot a while back.... at least I remember that green and orange portrait above the fireplace. And yes to cast iron frying pans. We have two- cherry red and sky blue and they are the best.

  3. So lovely. Most of our housewares are 'vintage'. Sometimes I'm not sure if from the charity shop can be classed as vintage :)

    2. Nit picking I know, but items are termed vintage if they are over 20 years old. Charity shop stuff is always mixed so is generally referred to as thrift if it's not strictly vintage.

  6. I was introduced to the wonderful world Keke just recently! Such a beautiful life, and fantastic and inspiring recipes. I was ecstatic when I stumbled across the 'love fern' paella...now to buy a paella pan!

We too are adding to our wholefoods pantry- little by little. We bought a cast iron pan a few months ago, have been re-purposing old glass jars and tin cans for storage and creating a humble herb and vegie garden...in our equally humble courtyard.

I'm looking forward to future installments of your "inspired by" series, and reading more on your wholefoods journey. Wishing you a lovely week.

    Sar xx

  7. oh I meant to say Jodi- look out for the Aldi cast iron cookware.
I can say from the experience of owning both le Creuset ones (VERY expensive!!!!!) and ALdi ones (soooo incredibly cheap!!) that there is NO difference in terms of cooking quality.
The Aldi ones come up every now & then and are usually $20 (i kid you not!!!) for all manner of sizes and types, oven dishes, griddles, pots and frypans.
also- camping shop ones are also great & cheap!!!! they come unenamelled. you just need to season them.

  8. A stunning kitchen. The plants just complete it.
We have a Lodge pan too and love it. Made in the US and so solid. Plus it looks brand new nearly a year after we bought it. Try 'The Esssential Ingredient' a lovely kitchen store if there's one near you.

  9. I have a picture of her kitchen on my Pinterest board and look at it often! Interestingly since I started Pinterest I have really stopped buying magazines. Now I am feeling the need to strip down some of my boards so that I have fewer images there. Sometimes there is too much, don't you think?

  10. That sentence "almost everything I have is either a vintage flea-market find or made by my friends" - that's exactly the type of home we have and are trying to create. I've never come across Inside Out, I'll have a look next time I'm at the newsagent. As for the Cast Iron pans, there are always great ones on Ozsale :)

  11. With the exception of our new dishwasher...be still my heart...nothing in our house is new.
It is filled with pieces given to us from family or friends, picked up second hand, or built by my handy husband.

If you can be patient, it is amazing what you can find in thrift stores or at garage sales or on Freecycle.
I have picked up Le Creuset pots, beautiful jugs and teapots and all manner of knives and other kitchen odds and ends!

    Happy hunting!

  13. Lovely. I use those empty Maccona coffee jars for almost everything! and no, I don't drink it, I get my folks to give me their empty ones, or their friends, and they always have them in the op-shops, especially the really big ones :) they just need a good wash (and pop the rubber seal out too). Best of treasure hunting!!

  14. I came across you found keke a year ago and have loved every 'interview' in particular love fern paella. Her whole house is just swoonworthy. I used to get Inside out here in the uk, but sadly no more. It's a great magazine with really quirky homes. I must see if I can hunt a copy down. Lou x

  15. Oh I've ripped this very same article out and glued it into my "heavenly home" journal! Little snippets of loveliness everywhere. Yes, that wholefoods journey is a winding one isn't it?! Two steps forward, one step back here I'm afraid but slowly the pantry is filling with little jars of coloured this and that. What a beautiful post...I look forward to more. Have a beautiful night :) x

  17. I must check her out...I adore her kitchen! I've been re-evaluating my whole home lately. I'm a bit too cautious and scared of color but yet, I wish I could just pick her whole kitchen up and put it in my house. We have changed our eating a completely fresh/root diet and I would love for my kitchen to compliment that,in texture and color.
I'm already loving this series! You're a treasure trove of inspiring ideas...

  19. Not everything is vintage in our house, but there is almost no furniture that is brand new...they are all hand-me-downs and second hand sales. But the ones I have received from friends are the most dear to us.xo

  24. The whole food path is an intriguing one isn't it. The last couple of months I've been slowly swapping some things around in my cooking. My challenge was to do it in a sneaky way, rather than say hey this is ...., and that's what we are eating tonight. So far no complaints which I'm thrilled about. And when the little people actively ask for something that wouldn't normally have eaten... quiet high five to me.
I'm sure what ever you end up doing with your kitchen Jodi, it will be amazing.
