slow summer mornings
Slow mornings - the best thing about school holidays. This summer there have been days when we've risen early, packed the car and headed straight to the beach. But sometimes we wake, doze and marvel at the shrill of cicadas - a persistent soundtrack. There have been more of the latter this past week or so and I've been relishing in it; the not needing to be anywhere but
here is so nourishing, so comforting.
After book reading and chatting we make our way to the kitchen for boiled eggs and soldiers, fresh juice and fruit salad. On Sundays we eat pancakes and if the weather is a little cooler and grey I make porridge with peaches and maple syrup (highly recommend it). And then, will full bellies and a little motivation, we go about our day.
The morning mood sets the scene; regardless of how busy we get, at least we've had the opportunity to connect and be at breakfast.
I need a little more inspiration for my breakfast menu. What are you eating at the moment? I saw an amazing recipe for black rice pudding with coconut cream a few days ago - it went straight on my list!

We are fans of pancakes, too, particularly the kids. My very favourite breakfast is Greek yoghurt with granola and fresh berries, but I'm also quite partial to Bircher muesli; delicious and convenient (if made the night before).

We love to make a dutch baby about once a week. Smoothies, too. Oatmeal often. Baked eggs are a favorite as well!
ReplyDeleteI've been making 'green smoothies' with spinach, organic bananas, blueberries and chia seeds. We as a family love farm fresh poached eggs with homemade bread toasted. Coffee is a definate must too!!

ReplyDeleteWe've also been enjoying very slow Summer mornings. I've been lucky enough to have my husband home since the 20th! He goes back to work next week which is very sad. Happily, one of my sisters is coming to stay for a week (she currently lives in NZ) so I'm super excited about that!
ReplyDeleteWe are big fans of the slow breakfast here. We often do eggs (all different ways depending on the way we feel at the time) with smoked salmon, braised kale, tomatoes, mushrooms and whatever else we fancy. Sometimes we warm up leftover quinoa tabbouleh and have that on a piece of flatbread spread with avocado and a poached egg burst over it.

Our standard though is a couple of scoops of organic greek yoghurt, a handful of homemade granola topped with fresh mango pieces.

steel cut oats with maple syrup and banana, or with honey and peanut butter :) and speaking of peanut butter, a grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich is pretty scrumptious for breakfast as well x

ReplyDeleteMost mornings I feel like I'm running a cafe with the breakfast orders I receive from my girls. Only one eats pancakes. Only one eats eggs. Lately, we've all been enjoying frappes - fresh orange juice, homemade yoghurt, frozen berries, bananas etc. all blended together. PS Love the new space, Jodi. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteA lovely post, as always, Jodie. I'm currently fanatical about overnight oats. Combine oats, plant milk, ground flaxseed, cinnamon and vanilla. Leave it in the fridge overnight. It's ready to eat in the morning, topped with fresh fruit. Can't get enough!

ReplyDeleteI generally have muesli for breakfast, but when I want a treat I love a mango smoothie (we bought a box of mangoes, chopped them up and stashed them in the freezer for just such needs). This morning, I made a batch of bran muffins from the Supernatural Everyday Foods cookbook. They're great with some jam and dollop of yoghurt. I freeze the ones that don't get eaten straight away and defrost them as needed. I saw a rather special breakfast recipe in the latest Gourmet Traveller - a quinoa, mango and coconut concoction. That's on my list of things to try next.

yes, it's the linen colour....and it's beautiful! Classic and very French. I'm guessing different lighting conditions in the photos may have changed the appearance x
DeleteI was lucky enough to receive a thermomix for Christmas and have been putting it to good use making smoothies. I've been having almond milk, frozen coconut cream/milk (in an ice tray - I use 4 cubes), a little vanilla and then either banana, berries or mango. It really is delicious x
ReplyDeleteSince one of our chickens has began to lay, eggs are high up on the list. Jarvis's favourite is scrambled eggs with chives.

ReplyDeleteI usually make porridge with blueberries & cinnamon or if i have a bit more time, french toast for me & my bubba. I popped over & checked out your post at adairs, your bed looks so lovely & invites sleep. I haven't spoilt myself with bedding for a long time, i think the colour combination you have used would go perfectly with my newly painted bedroom.
ReplyDeleteIsn't school holidays wonderful. I love how slow and lazy the days can be compared to the hectic rush of school days. For breakfast the kids love French toast, fruit shakes with chia seeds thrown in, frozen mango pieces, strawberries or grapes or home made granola bars. I'm also trying to find a good raw pudding recipe to try.

I actually stumbled upon your post on the Adairs website via a newsletter of theirs in my email inbox... I was scrolling through it and though, "Oh, there's Jodi!" It was a lovely post with gorgeous, relaxing images. I'd love to see more of your home. Your slow mornings sound like the kind we love here. We often have porridge and toast or breakfast, but last we week tried the chia pudding recipe from Petite Kitchen which was a nice change x
ReplyDeleteperhaps our breakfast is still too "winter time" for you at the other side of the world: Half a glass of linen seeds + 3 spoons of pollen + a handfull of almonds + some dry apricots (soak those 4 ingredients the night before), add in the morning agave nectar and an apple. Mix everything and drink this delicious mix (here is your breakfast, tonic, stimulating). Eggs and crepes are also on the list one's a week or more!
ReplyDeleteWell, breakfast here is a a very magical meal: cappuccino, caffèlatte, yogurt, handmade bread and handmade marmalade every morning (and, at the weekends, also handmade croissants, a cake or "focaccia", made with flour, water and olive oil). You just can't be sad or lazy starting a day with such delicious food.
ReplyDeleteI love the baked oatmeal out of Heidi Swanson's Super Natural Everyday cookbook. layer of banana slices on the bottom, then berries, then a mix of oats/baking powder/nuts/cinnamon followed by a blend of eggs, milk and maple syrup. topped off by more berries and nuts and baked for a bit. mmmm mmm good. of course it's winter here, so there's that...... in fact, in a week or so we'll be tapping the maple trees!
ReplyDeletesmitten kitchens overnight waffles on sundays for us, with whatever berries we can scavenge from the garden and butter. rest of the time a variation on nigell's museli (way less honey). i love breakfast with my whanu, one of the highlights of my day x

ReplyDeleteI realize this was posted quite a while ago, I am new to your site & so I feel like it was posted today. A breakfast (lunch or snack time) favorite of ours are apple sandwiches. I cut a whole wheat pita in half and smear the inside of the pocket with apple sauce (or apple butter) then fill it with thinly sliced apples. Sometimes I add raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon, but mostly I top it with a little fresh shredded mozzarella cheese. I then bake it in the toaster oven for a few minutes. We like them warm, but we try not to cook the apples to mush--we like a little crunch. Anyway, hope it can break up the monotony of breakfast.
