11/52

"A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Che: He is growing up so fast, blossoming. And his eyelashes are getting darker, lucky boy.
Poet: From our kitchen to a play kitchen. She laughs with all the big girls in Che's class.

This week I was so impressed by the composition in Caitlin's photo of Toddler C / Christie's 'unportraits' of Ryder and Willow are beautiful / joyful b+w jumping over at Lullaby & La La / a daydreaming Sylas / father and son bonding; a precious moment caught

I just wanted to tell you that although I only mention five of my favourite portraits I do manage to visit at least 100 of you each week. Almost three months into the project and I'm noticing such a change in your photographs - there's more depth to your images and a better understanding of light. But what I've noticed more than anything is the change in composition - so many of you are experimenting with angles...you're stepping away or moving closer, shooting through door frames or around trees, lying on the ground to get the shot.

I'm inspired and can't wait to see what you have in store for this week.

  3. p.s have you thought of setting up a Pinterest board that is open for people to pin their weeks captures on? I'm not entirely sure how that would work but I think seeing them all together in one group, growing up throughout the year would be amazing! x

    1. I've never stepped into pinterest land, simply because it's just 'another' thing to add to my list. I'm all for keeping things simple so I think I'll just stick to the link up here.

However, I was planning on adding two extra posts to the 52 Project this year. Half-way through the year I'll encourage you to post your three favourite portraits so far and at the end of the year, six of your favourites. It will be beautiful to see a 'mini-collection' that tells the story of the child/partner/subject x

    2. Jodi, that's a brilliant idea. Selecting 3 or 6 out of those 52 will be a kind of self-evolving process for us. We will cheer while going through those wonderful moments we captured as well as rejoice how we improved with our photography. Have a nice week ahead.

    3. ah ha! Yes it truly is addictive, you're probably right not to step over there (although is often very inspiring).
That sounds like a great idea, I can already fore-see how hard it will be to choose them though! x

  7. The light in both of these is so perfect. You are so inspiring to me every week, Jodi! And I agree- I think this whole project has me thinking outside the box (or inside the playhouse, looking out, in Oliver's case)! Thank you!

  8. Your photos are gorgeous as always.

And thank you for mentioning my photo from last week!
I have enjoyed taking photos for this project so much more than I thought I would.
And I love taking a few moments, generally on Friday night, to look at the photos and to pick one for the blog. Some weeks this process is really easy as I have known the moment I took the photo that it was going to be the one. Other weeks it is really hard as I either have a few that I like or I find that I haven't taken one that is just right.

  10. Jodi this fabulous project has actually got me thinking about how I take photographs... I'm no expert yet but practise makes perfect right? And by looking at everyone else's photographs just gives me inspiration to try new things and better my technique. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn and grow and at the same time create lasting memories of our precious ones...

  19. Such lovely light. I am looking forward to warmer weather and more time outside with our little daughter as the seasons change. Our house is in an unfortunate position when it comes to natural light, so I am really looking forward to the longer days.

  25. This portrait of Che is stunning. He's looking so grown up all of a sudden - perhaps with the start of school?

This project is incredibly inspiring, isn't it! I adore pouring through both mine & others portraits each week, noticing the differences from the beginning of the year (or the previous week!); new compositions, new light, new angles, new focus.
It is a delight to be a part of this community. To witness such beauty.

  29. I love that light that you have captured in Che's portrait, the way it is falling in his forehead and eyelashes.
I am so impressed that you get around to that many links each week, on top of looking after you kids and working. Wow. Thank you for those encouraging words. I think a project like this really pushes you to mix things up a bit and aim for something a little different each week.

  30. Oh, lady! Thanks for the encouragement. It's so inspring to hear that you visit so many blogs each week.
Love the dark and light in Che's portrait.

  31. I start visiting 'just one or two' and find I can't stop. It's like an addiction stepping from one beautiful frame to another. I really love it and agree that everyone is improving week by week. Just amazing.

I'm itching to get a few 'contemplative' shots like you do with Che so well, but my kids just don't seem the moody, whimsical kind. Bummer that!!! x

  32. Gorgeous captures Jodi.
I'm loving the evolution of Poet's curls. A tad jealous I am.

I wish I had more time to click through the list of portraits every week.

    Have a lovely week.

  40. It's true, I can see my image evolve each week. It gets boring to shoot the same person from the same angle each week and I like that it's pushing me to diversify my composition. Thank you for the link back this week :) And thank you, again, for hosting. I'm really enjoying checking out the work of others. You images this week are lovely, as always.
