pottery green bakers

Sometimes when we drive into the city we stop at Gordon for a coffee and a bite to eat. Yesterday we discovered Pottery Green Bakers - a tiny, bustling cafe with definite quirk. Daniel and I both agree that it looks a little like an urban terrarium; if it were a movie it would be Tim Burton's baby.

There's wilted wildflowers in steel urns and freshly baked sourdough lining the wall. Plants are suspended from old shipping pulleys and lights dangle from exposed beams. A French lounge sits in the corner, friends huddle around low tables.

Design aesthetic: rustic opulence. Coffee: best I've had in months.

Which begs the question - how do you like your coffee? And where do you buy yours?

ps. sarah...thanks for introducing yourself. it was so lovely to meet you x

  3. Hi Jodi, Paul makes the best coffee I've ever had, right here in my own kitchen, every morn. Latte, every so often cappucino when I need sweetening up ;) It makes it really hard to go out for coffee! Great pictures btw, (of course) xxx

  6. looks like it's full of character. what a find! I'm all for soy flat white. I started drinking soy milk while breastfeeding my lactose intolerant baby, and now I prefer it. And I love my coffee fix every day!

  7. You all have the best coffee- I'm sure ours doesn't even compare! I like a simple latte or a slow-drip brew. (And super amazing photos, by the way!)

  8. That looks like a gorgeous little cafe...just the sort of place where I would like to stop and have a coffee.
Flat while extra hot in winter.
    Iced latter in summer.
Or a good old fashioned cup of french press coffee with a splash of milk if I am at home.

    Have a good weekend!

  9. I feel in America the art of the cafe lifestyle is so lacking and I lust over the way it is integrated into a way of life in places like Paris. I feel fortunate that our current village has a few good places. It was a requirement for whichever town we chose for relocating. My husband and I are such homebodies and when we do go out we like to sit together in a bustling place and play role of flies on the wall. I'm sitting in a little local cafe right now, actually, finishing up some schoolwork. (Or, rather, I've cast my open book to the side and have been reading a few blogs...)

When I go out I like to get a soy latte. I like the nutty flavor the soy lends the espresso over cow's milk. My favorite place to grab a coffee to go/buy our coffee is the local natural foods co-op! They make all-organic drinks and they don't charge for a soy substitute. It's somehow some of the best and most affordable coffee in town. If I'm drinking coffee at home, we have a grinder and a French press and I drink it black. I like a nice earthy sumatra. When I was younger I spent quite a bit of time in Hawaii during my summer breaks and sometimes I like to splurge on ordering some Kona coffee.

    My best,
    Jo Farmer

  10. Best consistent brew I've found is at home using Monjava beans on our kitchenaid espresso machine. Extracts very well however we would love to put a custom steam arm on it as it does rubbish froth. I've heard bliss organic cafe in Adelaide does great coffee so I'm busting to get there. We love our coffee here.

    2. Daniel and I are looking to buy our own coffee machine, grinder etc. We see it as an investment that will save us quite a bit in takeaway coffees x

    3. I couldn't function without our machine, one of the gauges is playing up at the moment and I go into denial every time I think about having it serviced. I start the day with a small cappuccino but come 2-3pm I'm looking for a double shot to get me through. You could pay a machine off easy in 6 months if you both have 2 a day. DO IT! :)

  11. I love the taste of coffee but caffeine doesn't seem to agree with me so if i have one i have it 1/4 strength or decaf which just isn't as good! I'm a hot chocolate kinda girl! I've been told that now i have a baby i'll have to bulid up a tolerance to caffeine as i'm going to need it to get through sleepless nights!
That cafe looks lovely, i'll have to have a sticky beak next time i'm down that way.
We're lucky here on the coast, there seems to be more & more great cafes popping up.

  12. Beautiful images, as always, Jodi!

Being an artist, I of course work at a local coffee shop - it seems to be a requisite for the creative arts. We have our coffee shipped from Coffee Supreme up from Melbourne, and I use their South blend at home. Best coffee I've ever tasted! They've managed to keep their blends incredibly consistent, especially considering they are now roasting for shops across Aus and NZ. Their South blend has a lovely smooth, chocolately finish and plenty of body.
I can't go past a long macchiato on soy or almond milk or, in Summer, a cold drip single origin with agave nectar.

Do you know what coffee Pottery Green Bakers uses?

    1. Oh I've never heard of Coffee Supreme - I'll have to check it out. Pottery Green Bakers use Toby's Estate (organic) coffee - always good but this particular barista made an ahmazing cappuccino! x

  17. Us Montrealers love our café too. J buys freshly roasted beans once a week at a little coffee house that's been around since 1910.

Your photos are gorgeous, what a lovely little gem this place looks like. xx

  18. I drink mine black. Decaf thee days due to panic attacks if I drink regular. But I love it so much I still do the decaf. My favorite spot for this is a little market in my town called "Forage". They are in an old mill building, and they have an amazing bakery and sell local, organic produce and meats, as well as serving lunch.
